Two of That Dubai Site’s editors were there for the 15:00 opening of At The Top the new observation deck on level 124 of the newly opened Burj Khalifa.  This is by far the highest observation level of any building in the world.

The observatory is destined to be one of the main highlights of any visit to Dubai or even the Middle East.

The journey starts on the lower ground level of The Dubai Mall whilst on a 65-metre-long travelator ride.  Throughout the journey to the top the visitors are entertained by a multi-media presentation of the history of Dubai and the marvel of Burj Khalifa tower itself.

You then begin your ascent to the observation deck in a high-speed elevator, travelling at 10 meters per second.  The elevator walls are made of backlit black glass which makes for a very strange sensation coupled with the fact that there is no sense that the lift is actually moving until you notice the pressure change in your ears.

Then the doors open and floor-to-ceiling glass walls provide a breath-taking unobstructed 360-degree view of the city, desert and ocean.

The small tower you see in the middle of the picture above is in fact the 63 story Address Hotel.  Its not until you realise just how tall the other buildings are around the Burj that you come to appreciate just how tall the Burj is itself.

The other great thing about this tower is that so much of the surrounding area is still under development so there will always be something new to see each time you visit.

During the annual event the organisers have organised attractions such as nightly pyrotechnic and laser displays, street performances, events at local theatres and catwalk fashion shows.  Not all of the performances are concentrated on shopping; there will be street performance from famous local singers, guitarists and comedians. Dubai Shopping Festival 2010

Just for the fun of it

This beautiful and spectacular time-lapse film was shot over 5 days and nights by the photographer Philip Bloom.

Mirdif City Centre Mall

Mirdif City Centre is the latest of the shopping malls currently to open in Dubai boasting over 400 shops. This was initially conceived in April 2007 and construction started 5 months later with the grand opening date of 16 March 2010. The company owning this mall expects to build a further 20+ malls in the next 5 years in the Middle East with some of that possibly to be in Dubai.

Mirdif City Centre is going to be similar in size to the Mall of the Emirates, with some 60 eating outlets comprising of two food courts, cafes, restaurants, a Carrefour hypermarket which is the largest hypermarket chain Wal-Mart and Tesco.  There is also a 10 screen outdoor cinema complex, and a Magic Planet children's entertainment area. The most unusual and unique concept for this mall is the activities that are found within in its 25,000 sq m entertainment area “Super” mall such as "iFly"-an indoor skydiving center,  Aquaplay-a water based recreation zone and Soccer Circus, an interactive football attraction. It also includes a fitness centre, salon, spas, community room and medical clinics.

As is typical in Dubai, big means huge and the size of this mall is to be believed. The total size is 5.9 million sq ft with a retail area of 2.1 million sq ft over two floors, and a total number of shops planned of 430 including fashion, electronics, entertainment and leisure including Debenhams, Emax, and Home Centre.
